Jo Shaw began the journey into adult life like most wide-eyed high school graduates, by going to a local college, in this case, Wilkes University, in Pennsylvania, so that she could remain close to friends and family. While pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, she decided to join the Army National Guard as a combat medic. Reality soon forced Jo to organize a balance between work, studies, social responsibilities and military service.
Jo earned her Bachelor’s degree and, after five years in the Army National Guard, she transferred to active duty Air Force where she served one tour of duty in Iraq. One hurdle to higher education that military service presents is constant relocation. Jo’s interest in technology led her to Walden University, an online school that would allow her to earn both her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology without the need to constantly transfer to difference universities and satisfy the migratory nature of the military.
While earning her masters with Walden, Jo again transferred to the Air Force National Guard for an additional three years before she was medically discharged due to injuries sustained in Iraq. She continued to serve her fellow veterans at the VA Medical Center of Los Angeles for six years. Here she worked with the large homeless population to help them develop life organization, cope with PTSD, fight addiction and generally get their lives back on track.
Throughout her career, she has worked in various settings and with several populations that include: inpatient, outpatient, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, veterans, families and children separated from their families.
Her array of skills and diverse experiences allow her to address parents and their children using a multi-modal approach. Additionally, Dr. Shaw is a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health (BC-TMH) professional through Center for Credentialing & Education.
Dr. Jo Shaw has over 15 years experience working with parents and their children. Now, she is bringing her knowledge to telehealth to improve access to care.
